While most types of hearing loss can't be prevented, noise-induced hearing loss absolutely can! Here's how to keep your ears safe:
- Dodge noisy environments when you can. Your ears will thank you!
- Use hearing protection when noise is unavoidable. Simple foam earplugs work well, but custom-fit protection is even better. The Audiology South team can help you find the perfect fit. You can read more here.
- Limit exposure to sounds above 85 decibels (that's about as loud as heavy traffic).
- Turn down the volume on TVs, radios, and headphones. If others can hear your headphones, they're too loud!
- Take listening breaks during loud activities like concerts or fitness classes. Your ears need rest too!
- Step away from loud sound sources like speakers, fireworks, or sirens whenever possible.
- Give your ears recovery time after noise exposure. They need to bounce back!
- Keep objects out of your ears – anything smaller than your elbow shouldn't go in there! That includes cotton swabs, bobby pins, keys, and paperclips.
- Stay active – regular exercise improves blood flow throughout your body, including your ears, keeping them healthy.
- Get your hearing tested if you notice changes in your hearing or experience ringing or fullness in your ears for more than 24 hours.
