Audiology South’s support for Invercargill’s new dementia care village

Posted Wednesday December 7, 2022

The Hawthorndale Care Village, a not-for-profit dementia care facility in Invercargill, is based on the model of the Dutch care village De Hogeweyk. It will provide much needed options for dementia sufferers and their families, and Audiology South is excited to be involved with this initiative.

Its concept is to replicate everyday life in a suburban neighbourhood within a safe, secure setting, and the design of the village, the philosophy and way its residents are cared for is centred around evidence that suggests familiarity, comfort and stimulation has the greatest Impact on overall health and well-being.

“We are delighted to support such a worthwhile cause. So often among our clients we see the stress and heartache a lack of dementia care in the community causes. Some families are faced with no other option but to have a loved one live in another town to receive the care they need, or to try and manage care at home.

“Along with ongoing financial support, Audiology South staff will take time out from the clinic twice a year to help with landscaping and gardening in the Village, and we look forward to providing practical assistance as well as getting to know the residents and carers.” said Simon Melville, Senior Audiologist and company director.
